A visit to the historical town of Childers - positioned on a ridge with magnificent views overlooking thousands of hectares of vivid green sugarcane and avocado farms - offers a chance to step back in time as you take in many of the town's historical buildings, some of which date back to Queensland's early pioneering day, including The Old Pharmacy.
Childers is also home to the Backpacker Memorial Wall - 'Taking a Break in the Field' - located in the Childers Arts Space, which honours the victims - 15 backpackers, 12 of which were from overseas, who were working in the sugarcane fields at the time - of the June 2000 fire that destroyed the Palace Building. Spend some time in Childers taking in the memorial and the arts space, followed by the Old Pharmacy, and then head to the Childers outskirts for a ploughman's lunch at Vintner's Secret Vineyard.
