Senior General Surgical Trainee – Mount Gambier, SA

Dr Matt Watson is currently undertaking his final year of General Surgery training in South Australia.

Matt grew up on a sheep station in rural South Australia and is an active advocate for rural and regional surgery. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Adelaide, Graduate Diploma in Surgical Anatomy at James Cook University and a Master of Surgery from the University of Sydney. During his surgical training he has worked in Mount Gambier, Whyalla, Port Lincoln, Darwin and Adelaide.

His research focuses on rural colorectal outcomes, having led multicentre studies on colonoscopy and emergency laparotomy in South Australia. Matt was also awarded the University of Adelaide Teaching Award for developing and coordinating an online surgical curriculum for University of Adelaide medical students during COVID-19.

Upon completion of his training, Matt plans to return to Mount Gambier as a colorectal and general surgeon.
